Another Landscape
The Claude Glass was an optical device popular among travelers and artists in the 18th and 19th century. The user of a glass would turn their back on a landscape only to gaze at its beauty through a mirror. Though unable to fix the image in a permanent way it allowed the viewer to momentarily frame and capture the view.
Another Landscape is a participatory installation that reimagines the Claude Glass’ relationship to both viewer and landscape. For the duration of the exhibition a new landscape will be projected onto the sculpture’s surface each day. These images can be accessed via smartphone camera (augmented reality) by visiting Alex McKenzie’s Instagram page @agmckenz and selecting the “another landscape” effect filter listed in the gallery. Further instructions can be found on the placard next to the piece.
All landscape imagery was captured 24 hours prior to its display and are contributed by a network of artists, friends, and acquaintances throughout the country.
